I have 'award' bios as far as my limited begginer knowledge can tell
the computer has two onboard serial ports, com1,com2. com1 is the mouse
com2 is disabled as this is the modem card.

 BP> com1 - something
 BP> com2 - real com 2
 BP> com2 - modem which is com3.

BP> I had a similar problem with a mates computer.

yeh, I've received another reply and the guy also related similar experiences
with several other computers.

Thanks for replying, Ive since developed another problem, it went like this:
I would use the modem and lose my soundblaster sound. Then when trying to
upload I would get a cps of 3 until it aborted.
I got a bit upset, took out the screwdriver took cover off computer.
Noticed that soundblaster and modem are in neighbouring slots and that they
were almost touching, the modem has a circuit board piggy backed upside down
on it like a sandwich. So I swapped sb and scanner card and all seems fine now.

I still have the two com2's though ;)

... Not tonight, dear. I have a modem.
