Lucy, I am assuming from your origin line that you are located in California?
I am, and here is what I know of the laws on homeschooling in California:
California does NOT recognize "homeschooling" per se. To homeschool in
California, you must do one of three things:
1, If you are a credentialed teacher, certified to teach the subjects and
grade level/s that reside in your family, you needn't worry too much. Or, in
leiu of this, you may hire a tutor to provide complete instruction for so
many hours a week (28 I believe is the number).
OR
2. You may register with your local school district as a homeschooler. This
means they will provide everything you need to homeschool, the state
considers your child a public school child (right down to paying your
district a fee for your child), and you provide the direct, but extremely
overly supervised teaching. If you want to be independent and guide your
child's learning, or if you are homeschooling for religious reasons, you may
not want to go this route.
OR
3. You may register with your county department of education as a private
school. This must be done on October 1 of each school year. Come up with a
school name (can be simple like Galindo Family School or more complicated
like Dayspring Elementary) and the registration is free. The toughest part is
finding the right phone number at the county office. Call the section that
deals with private schools - DON'T mention the word "homeschool".
As for how much education you have to have yourself, California has no such
requirements for private schools. For your own comfort, tho, you need to feel
comfortable with the material you are teaching - and remember that
credentialed teachers in public and private schools sometimes have to study
the material beforehand in order to teach it.
