They are called the "Habs" not the "Havs".
 
Reason - people of French origin in Quebec are known as
"Habitants".  Since the Canadiens were started as a 
French-Canadian hockey club, they assumed the name.
 
BTW a lot of people aren't aware that for many years,
the Canadiens were allowed to reserve the first two
draft picks for themselves, as long as the picks were
French-Canadian.
