I can understand that.. kind of surprised you didn't like slackware though,
not sure if you've tried it... it doesn't have a ports-like system afaik 
though, so that may be a big turnoff...

I've only ever used gentoo for one thing.. and that was a dedicated database 
server (mysql, sigh, ugh)...
