I fully agree.  The ending was completely unexpected and something I would
not have anticipated in a Trek story.  I thought that it was possible that
some kind of resolution might have been worked out.  Given that the
"wisp" aliens were having trouble with their ship and that it
could not contain them much longer (the whole business with the ship has
questions, but I'm not going to ponder them now), I thought that one of the
reasons why they targeted Trip was to try to get engineering knowledge from
him to save themselves, while providing Trip with the diversion that being
a non-corporeal being entailed.  I thought that something could have been
worked out... until that ending.  It was completely unexpected, and not
exactly appreciated.
