Well, not having gotten as many kids as I'd hoped for, but having come
from a fairly large family, I've tended to collect nieces and nephews
instead.  In fact, I was referred to as "Aunt Nancy" by some of the kids
I was a camp counselor for, long before I or any of my sibs was married. 
And I've picked up "honorary" nieces and nephews of my friends' kids,
too...    This particular niece, though, is the oldest girl of a
family for which hubby and I have been "guardians of record", per my
sister's will... if anything were to happen to both the parents, we were
to be getting the kids to raise... so we did (and especially I did) put
some effort into making sure that they knew us a bit better, just in
case.  :)
