I had a Alphaserver 1200. The problem I had was linux support for the DAC9600
(hope I'm remembering that model # right) RAID controller it had. Redhat 7.2
kernel image had support for the card out of the box but was old. Debian was
newer but didn't support the card. I started out using the Redhat kernel on a
Debian distro. It was a nasting kludge but it worked. Later I ended up
finding 3rd party linux drivers for the controller and making a custom kernel
in Debian.

In terms of a distro today that still supports DEC Alphas and is modern, Debian
is probably it. On the plus side Debian is an excellent distro, as you already
know.

I miss my Alpha. Despite being older hardware it sure was an excellent web
server platform.

Regards,
Doug
