Dear Clara,
It was good to hear from you and I really believe you can make a difference.
Here's why....
CB> Nevertheless, we hope that the injustice to our daughter may
CB> open the door to justice for others as we seek it for her.

All of us who get this involved wind up feeling this way. None of set out
to change the world or to make a difference of such great magnitude, but
society thrust it upon us. Most people can walk away from it, but many
of can't. We're both people that can't hide our heads in the sand anymore.
Some days I long for the bliss of ignorance, but I can never go back and
be what I was. I miss the person I used to be, but I am also proud of
the person I have become because of all this. It's hard though, real hard.
CB> I did discover VOCAL, somewhat inactive, as you say.

I'm working on that! Hopefully soon it will pick up again.

CB> I went to a VOCAL meeting in Reno, and met Thelma Mathias, ...

Wonderful! I'll bet the support was desperately needed! :)

CB> I told Thelma I'd ask if it's proper to let it be known through BBS
CB> conferences that they need funds. Do you know?

My understanding is that it really isn't appropriate to ask for funds on
the BBS. I don't know if it's written in stone, but it just isn't a good
idea from what I've observed. Each chapter is responsible for generating
their own funds, usually out of their own pockets and some assistance from
the other VOCAL members. Perhaps you can find an organization or even a
church the might be willing to donate a certain amount of funds. Some
attorneys will help out (usually office supplies and stamps) because they
may get referrals from VOCAL. Mailing companies (like Mail Boxes Etc.)
will sometimes donate post office boxes, some free copies on the copy
machine, or free postage (i.e. book or roll of stamps). There are also
educational grants that can be applied for (since the public is being
educated about their rights). Some chapters also do fund raisers, like
car washes and bake sales, or people trying to get petitions signed for
family rights issues will sometimes have a donation can set up at their
table. In my case, I rely on my friends a good deal. If I need something
I give them a list of what I need (during meetings) and those that can help
will check off what they are donating or paying for.
CB> I _just_ wrote to George Wimberly, and I truly hope for some help.
CB> Seeking help so far, has been discouraging. I wrote to some senators,
CB> some ministries, even to the President and Janet Reno. The general
CB> response is something like, "This is out of our jurisdiction (field
 CB> of endeavor, etc.)..."
