This seems like a horrible rule of thumb for any network. Most hubs come with
12 ports and are quite expensive; I've never seen anyone toss out 60% of
their ports. The network in question has 36 ports currently in use. I've
never seen anyone put 5 network cards in a server, let alone an impossible 8.
There are some neat hubs available now that make for an easier migration
path. They provide a 100Mb connection into the server, but all the front end
ports are 10Mb. This gives essentially 10 full-speed channels into the front
(or 12 5/6-speed channels). By growing the next 12 connections into this
faster hub with 100/10 cards, then the _next_ hub can be pure 100Mb, and we
don't have to throw any expensive equipment away.
