In an exercise to see exactly how many shots could be had from a .177
gun at about match velocities (550-580). We shot over 335 shots from
2.75OZ of CO2 shooting Beeman Kodiak pellets at about 575 average. The
gun sported a Lothar/Walther barrel and 12" extension tube and was bulk
filled of course. As a team, one loading and the other shooting we shot
the gun as fast as we could and could not get it to shoot more than
about 30 fps extreme spread. The slow firing that most people do would
bnot only be way more consistent that this but would likely get even
more shots. The most interesting thing about the balance we struck with
this system was that the faster we shot the faster the velocity was. We
had a situation where the pressure developed by the room temperature gun
would slightly lock up the valve and at room temp the gun shot 550 and
the rapid firing resulted in the gun flowing CO2 more freely at a lower
pressure and actually picking up velocity as it got colder. The same
amount of gas would give maybe 12 ft. lbs for 125 shots but by dropping
the power we almost triple the number of available shots. This gun was
built special for Dean Fletcher (the Crosman historian). He has an extra
big soft spot for the QB's since they are a copy of his favorite crosman
160 and he has a book coming out soon that chronicles the QB project
from the beginning.
Maccari will be creating the wood for this project. The stock design is
a knockoff of the Venomac thumbhole stock at the rear end and the
Venomac Trophy from the pistol grip forward. It will be semi-inletted
and roughed out by Jim and then Myron Harris will do the final shaping.
Jim will be making a pattern that future stocks can be panographed from.
So who out there is ready to throw a custom stock at their Chinese QB
rifle. This collaboration is a first and if succesful will likely lead
to more mutually benefitial projects. Stay tuned.
Later Tim
