Hi!

You may have seen an earlier message from me asking for help.. Well, I have
a second unrelated problem on the same network. Help here would also be
appreciated.

I had a HP LaserJet 4+ printer fail at a customers site. This printer is
connected to a token ring Novell network using an HP JetDirect card. The
failed printer was still working, but the output is badly faded.

I printed a set-up page and then powered off the printer, removed the
network cable and removed the JetDirect card from the bad printer. I
replaced the failed printer with an identicle model printer, installing the
JetDirect card that was removed from the first printer. I configured 100% of
the printers settings that were accesible from the front panel to match the
first printer. Powered the printer off, then on and printed a set-up page.
All the settings were saved.

Now, nobody can use the printer!!!!

Under the Novell settings, the printer status is reporting #16 -
unconfigured. The NODE NAME and SERVER NAME are not matching the original
printer. These options cannot be programmed from the front panel of the
printer. I was able to TELNET into the printer across the network, so I'm
pretty sure that there is no cabling problem and that the printer and
JetDirect card are OK.

I reversed what I had done, putting the JetDirect card back into the
original printer, hoping that the users could live with faded printing until
I figured out what to do... I WASN'T THAT LUCKY... Now the original printer
has the same problem as the replacement - #16 - unconfigured...

Why doesn't the printer see the network? Why doesn't the network see the
printer? What do I have to do to tell the printer what Node Name and Server
Name to use?

None of the PC's on the LAN had HP JetAdmin loaded. I was able to download
this for W4WG and install it on a PC as per an HP techs instructions, but it
was unable to locate any printers on the network to configure.

I don't know Novell very well, and didn't have the password to get onto the
server and see what I could do there.

I expected this to be a piece of cake, the MAC address didn't change - I can
TELNET to the printer - All the settings I can get to are the same... so WHY
DOESN'T IT WORK?

Can ANYONE help me? PLEEEEEEEZE!

Steve
