subject: Sales tax on modems

JP>> Err, isn't the tax rate currently at 23%?

 RB>> Not with modems.

RB>> It s all over the place because of software content.

RB>> I recon that the courier should be taxed the cheapest because the

RB>> flash code is software, but no, it is the dearest.

JP> When you refer to "software", I presume you're also
taking into account

 JP> the

JP> bundled Internet, fax and terminal software. FWIW, I never use any of

 JP> that

JP> software. The software that came with my Courier is still in its shrink

 JP> wrap.

Same here, And I would say that 100% of the people that I know, still have

the bundled software shrink wrapped

Far as I am concerned bundling software (that is garbage, anyway)

with modems is a big scam to lower the tax on the hardware.

(that is its only benefit (if you could call it that)

The 14% or so tax should apply to all computers and components, because

computers (like modems and multimedia systems) cant work WITHOUT SOFTWARE.

The taxation dept is VERY inconsistant in its thinking.
