subject: Ubuntu Server 8.04

Hi Everyone,

Last week when my wife's HD crashed in her XP system, I decided it was time to
finally setup a home server to house all our backups. I started planning a
server last year, but just never got around to setting it back up. Not until
the crash with on backup did I finally get on the ball.

So, being a huge fan of Ubuntu I ran with Ubuntu Server. At first i installed
7.10, but then I installed 8.04 when it was released last Friday.

As usual, the OS installed in about 20 minutes and with 8.04 being released
that day there were no updates. Afterwards I installed Netatalk since our
laptops are OSX and installed two 320 gig HD's for backing-up via the network.

Once the backup routine was setup, I started working with Synchronet, which
I've wanted to get set back up for a while. After downloading
build-essentials, libncurses5-dev, and zip via apt-get, sync downloaded from
CVS and compiled with on problems, and once compiled just a few more minutes
and Dovenet was setup.

Since then, I've also installed mt-daapd (now known as Firefly Media Server) to
share our MP3's out via iTunes. It works great, just point to our backup
directory and it'll catalog all our Mp3's and make them available in one place.

Just wanted to share incase anyone is looking for a simple home server. I've
used Ubuntu server for many years, and being a huge fan of console-only servers
this is perfect.

Sam
