Hi Jim,

JA> I have downloaded the latest release so I could familiarize myself

NFBTRANS is very flexible indeed, and Randy has made some very nice
enhancements to it. However, to some degree, NFBTRANS starts at the
".BIF" point of logic in Turbo Braille. Particularly when you translate
WordPerfect files, Turbo-Braille figures out which commands to
substitute for specific WordPerfect format codes and places them in the
.BIF file. On the other hand, NFBTRANS starts with the commands that
you place in the document and takes it from there. NFBTRANS does have
some intelligence, too, and there are some tools such has the External
Format Language that can partially automate formatting. However, other
than editing the ASCII braille as you suggest which can be a real pain,
you have to edit the original text file, adjusting parameters, etc., as
you would have edited the "BIF" file in Turbo Braille.
If you use WordPerfect or even another word processor, you could achieve
some degree of automation using macros to change certain format codes to
NFBTRANS commands. For example, you could change all "CENTER" codes to
tilde c commands.
Hope this helps.
