I've create a dbf for testing purpose. I use Clipper 5.1 and with the DBU 
utility I can replace the field with chr(003) or chr(001) without problems. 
You can't use it with the ALT-GR key + numpad because some of those 
characters are the codes of movement keys.
Did you try in your application to use variables ?
I'm quite certain that if you do this :
->
//marker=the_code_you_want
// let say marker=3
marker=3
test='Johnston'+chr(marker)+'John'+chr(marker)+'Mr.'+chr(marker)
appe blan
repla name with test
->
You'll have the result you want. I use low ascii symbols (1->35) in one of my 
applications and this work very well.
