I'm a bit older, but I still know what it feels like to have a limited
amount of spare cash.

Assuming you don't want to mess with something free such as DJGPP....
About the best I could suggest would be:
1) see if you can find anything used in the for sale echos.
2) Since you are a student, you are probably eligable for student
discounts for a lot of software. Prices will still be over $100, but at
least it wouldn't be full price.
3) 4 or 5 months ago, there was a Symantec C compiler in Best Buy for
about $60. Fairly extensive. Unfortunately, it was only a limited time
offer, and they ran out right before I got the spare cash to get it.
You might find something like that.
4) There are some places that sell new, unopened copies of older
software. Places like Surplus Software. I never had any luck ordering
from them though. By the time I even heard about what they had, they
ran out.
Of course, if you do want to mess with DJGPP etc.... it's free. Updates
are free. Tech support is in places like Fido-net, and if you've got
internet access, several newsgroups. Overall, you'd probably get as
good as, or better, tech support. But, you don't get a lot of the
frills etc. that a commercial product does.
