Subject: ATM Sixtests versus other Foucault analysis programs: kindling wood

OK, I am going to risk getting flamed here.

I have noticed a lot of atm's on this list using programs other than Sixtests to
analyze Foucault data

It is true that Sixtests only digests data in millimeters.

I've got my Nomex suit on and a big foam extinguisher in hand, so flame away!

Let me be the first with the torch.

The Millimeter vs. inch thing alone is enough to keep me from using
it. I think the rest of the world is arrogant thinking that the U. S.
should convert to their way. I'll continue to use inches, leagues, and
hogsheads.

All that strehl and rms stuff is overkill. When I am figuring all I
want is a graph that gives a shape to decide where best to remove glass.
For the most part just knowing what the desired knife movement between
zones should be and what you have is enough. You get those numbers right
and any proper program will tell you the mirror is good. It is not a secret
that the outer zone knife movements need to be closer to the desired
numbers than the inner zones. And it just turns out that they are the
easier to determine precisely. But anyway, you get them as close as you can
and what does all that other stuff matter? You have the numbers as close as
you can get them. That means you can't make it better. You can see the
smoothness in the Foucault and Ronchi. Get it smooth and the numbers as
close as possible and you are done.

When you are done you can calculate all that rms and strehl and so
on if you wish.

I'll do mine in inches. Think about how much culture will be lost if
the U. S. gives up on our measures.

"Give him a 25.4 millimeters and he will take 1.609 kilometers"
"He was beaten within .0254 meters of his life." "A penny
wise and a Euro foolish."

My mirror is accurate to a nanoleague.

Jerry
