Marion,
From the "World of Amazon Parrots".
A. ochrocephala auropalliata - Yellow Naped Amazon. Like the nominate
subspecies, but without yellow forhead and lores (occasionally yellow
feathers
occur on the forhead); yellow nape band; bend of wing green; thighg green;
bill greyish.
Range; Northwestern Nicaragua northward, along the Pacific coast to easten
Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
A. o. parvipes -Yellow Naped Amazon. Like the auropalliata but with red on
the
bend of the wing; bill duller colored.
Range; Along the Caribbean coast from the northeastern Nicaragua to
northeastern Honduras, including the Isla de la Bahia. This subspeicies is
classified as seperate from the Yellow-crowned Amazon.
So, it seems that with some the nominate species is the Yellow-Crowned. The
Parvipes being considered a seperate species.
My oldest male, Hector, has been in capitivty for at least 20 years. He is
mostly a green color, dark bill, small yellow spot on the forhead and a rusty
brownish-red at the bend of the wings. I noticed that someone else has a
Naped
that is similiar to Hector in looks. Wonder where they are from? And I don't
think that they would be considered as part of the Yellow-Crowned species.
I never got around to asking Kim Joyner (Guatamala Research) about the
subspecies. I guess because she doesn't have a book out to reference.
And I do imagine that most of the species have been sleeping around with each
other for years. These would be the American subspecies A. o.
ix-an-match.
