I also like both methods but any good newsreader will catigoryize messages 
based on 'subject' then if you reply properly (and the others do as well) 
it's farily easy to keep replies in the proper place.
 
my biggest problem with newsgroups, compared to most fidonet echo's, is that 
there is quite a bit of 'spam' in the newsgroups, and some very 'nasty' 
(ie:sexually oriented) messages.  It's very difficult to let ones kids access 
even the supostobly (sp) more safe newsgroups with out some severe 
supervision.
