subject: modem speeds

Hello there Alex ....

 AM> G'day Randall,

AM>> What's the highest speed you have EVER got on any of your

 AM>> 28.8 or 33.6 modems? A couple of nights ago, I got 4290 cps,

AM>> upload on a 28.8K connection. The file was compressed with

AM>> PKZIP, using maximum compression (-EX) and the file was about

 AM>> 1.6MB big. Zmodem protocol, V.42 and V.42bis, etc. I thought

AM>> maybe my comms program was buggering up, but when the upload

 AM>> finished from their

 RL>> It's lying! Simple.

AM> Yeah, I thought I'd get replies saying that. It sounds like

AM> bull to me too, but when both ends report it, I believe it. I

I don't!!

AM> also timed it using my watch, at 3300cps it'll do 1000000 bytes

AM> in 4:58, it was below 4 minutes when it reached 1,000,000 bytes,

AM> and I trust my watch. Telix also reported the same thing. The

 AM> file was 1.6MB.

It's impossible, Alex. It's that simple.

AM>> end it reported 4290 cps average. What do you think? This

AM>> modem is a Netcomm Roadster V34, and the highest CPS rate I ever

AM>> got before was 3390 cps in the same situation as above.

 RL>> ^^^^^

AM> Why did you highlight the before bit? I changed nothing, and

AM> it was definitely a ZIP file. Why don't you try the BBS? It's

AM> called Stargate and it's in Melbourne, don't have the number on

AM> hand but it's in the VIC BBS listing.

What for? The 4290cps is pure nonsense.

RL>> Even that is good for a Roadster. The 4290 is not even

RL>> remotely possible giving your example above.

AM> Hey, 3390 is good for any modem. In a magazine I read, the

That is very true, hence my statement regarding the Sportster. They have

not the internal constitution of some other quality modems. 8bit can

only do so much.

AM> Roadster kicked the ass out of all the other 28.8K modems at the

AM> time, including the 28K Courier at the time.

Magazine articles rarely generate "real time" operations in their tests.

In the field the Roadster is an average performer.
