Yes.  I recall a dramatic decrease in memory usage after upgrading to gcc4 way
back when.  However I have doubts there will be a decrease this time around but
there might be in some of the software I tend to be attracted to.  We'll see.

Last I heard sometime this week.  It was supposed to be last week but they
decided to go with a second release candidate instead.
