>JM - I think Mantovanni is better written than Calhoun. I'm not saying I'm=
 a
better writer than Peter David, overall; he's done some brilliant stuff.

>I AM saying that Liberty SMOKES New Frontier---hands down.

>I can see the superficial similarities in the characters. I believe,
however, that Mantovanni has more depth.

I've noticed the similarities too, but still find that Liberty stories are
= easier to take.
I have come to *extremely* dislike New Frontier stories, since I simply don=
't like
the bizarre, over-the-top characters. In one of the books Riker appears an= d he
made a comment something like, "What am I doing on this ship?" I
had the s= ame
feeling. Peter David lost it with me in the original stories when the Grea= t Bird
of the Galaxy (?!?!? gak!!!) erupted from some planet. This violated one o= f my
rules of writing, avoid the overblown ending ("2001" had the same
problem, = I felt).
I strongly dislike the way that series is heading. A lot of the fan fictio= n by the
writers here present more satisfying non-TV-canon crews than the New Fronti= er
stories.
