I don't think it has to do with mainstream, Mac also has descriptive names.

Exactly, it's a feature of a GUI OS that the Linux world has yet to
realize, this is the reason I said what I did about the UI being an easy
switch. The effect of a GUI on application names has not yet had sufficient
time to do it's thing on Linux yet.
