Good question.

It doesn't always "just work" and it's not integrated into Linux
in any significant way.

Ewww. I hate NFS too. I usually end up cobbling Samba to work in the long
term and in the short term I use smbclient, which works pretty well but is
pure cmdline stuff., or FTP. I use LPR/LPD for printing instead of samba.
