If it's the USR Sportster rebadge, &F1 is all that is required to
initialise the modem, and &K0 will solve the pausing problem by
disabling the faulty BTLZ compression.  USR themselves have also suggested
S12=0 as a cure, but I can't see how (nor is there any evidence to suggest
that it actually works).
