The proper name is amateur radio. The "ham" comes from amateur radio's infancy when commericial radio operators disliked those "ham-fisted" amateur radio operators infringing on their frequencies. You might see it as "HAM" but that is not the proper form of the nickname. Also, there's two reasons why it's called "amateur radio": we are disallowed by law any pecuniary compensation for our services and we love our hobby. :) We're also considered the "amateur radio service" by the Federal government.
