Bill Reyna, responds to your question....
After flashing or whatever is stored in the modem, I use only ATZ| for the 
init 1 string in the FDsetup. While I do have FAX info for the remaining 
inits, they remain the same as well, meaning I *never* change anything in any 
of the BBS setup, since I only require ATZ to refresh the current status, 
thus you only fiddle in one area(the modem) for a good init string. I've been 
quite happy with the basic init of:
AT&F2
AT&M0S95=43S192=0
save it as AT&W&W1
Basically, any time I really "fine-tuned" the init strings it usually caused 
a problem for someone calling the bbs so I leave it as a simple as possible. 
I have still yet to connect at 288k or higher but blame thaT on a rural phone 
system, but have had solid connects with those below 288k. I too have the 
latest beta flash releases and seen no down-grade of the connects, but no 
real benefit neither at least I haven't noticed it. good luck -_-_-Bill
