subject: Teacher Testing

CB>Quotes are taken from a message written by Paul to All on 08/07/96...

CB>PS> The State of Washington is now proposing a teacher testing
CB>PS>process in an attempt to weed out teachers who are underqualified in
CB>PS>term of their own academics.
CB>PS>
CB>PS> I was wondering if anyone has already studied the effectiveness
CB>PS>of doing this process? Do students learn better with teachers
CB>PS>who have or can complete such a process? Are these tests effective?

CB>This IS an interesting question and it deserves more study. But a lot
CB>of the motivation for it is due to schools' sensitivity to public image.
CB> Notes and letters with grammatical errors or mispellings sent home to
CB>parents from the very people who are supposed to teach grammar and
CB>spelling are an embarrassment. Math assignments with poorly constructed
CB>problems sent home with children are also embarrassing.

CB>Colleges graduate future teachers who have achieved no higher than 65%
CB>accuracy in their work - a totally unacceptable benchmark.
CB>student teachers in math who BUTCHER the terminology used in class,
CB>sometimes so badly that I stop the lesson to correct them (these are
CB>college seniors, one semester from certification).

I sincerely hope that you don't recommend them for graduation?
Why are our colleges graduating folks with only 65% accuracy in their
work? Why are you forced to deal with the grammer skills of student
teachers?
Which of the following is better? a) quit smoking b)
receiving treatment for diseases related to smoking.

If there is a problem it should be treated in a logical manner.
I really wonder if this form of legislation will produce a successful
result? I believe that Ruth said it best, "It really depends on what
sort of test is given."

Keep your stick on the Ice,
Paul
