A good USB 3.1 stick is much faster than a SD card, even via the USB 2
of Pi's (prior to 4). I recommend putting the whole of the root
partition on it, not just certain directories, leaving just boot on the
SD card. It will be much quicker and the SD card will last indefinitely.
