To be fair, a bit rate mismatch will ONLY ever affect an incoming RING, and
as the Courier will "autobaud" on any AT command, it doesn't
cause problems with outbound calls.  The problem is that with ATZ, whilst
AT "autobauds" to the terminals stored bit rate, the subsequent Z
immediately restores the modem's stored bit rate (as indicated with ATI4). 
This is documented in the manual, but not particularly clearly IMO.

True, Rockwells do not suffer from this "anomaly" (I won't call
it a bug, as USR themselves maintain that their modems were actually
designed that way).
