My last California smog check was around 1999. It was that year that I
found out that certain areas of the back country were smog exempt and that
is where I registered all of my cars. I moved here in 2005, so I got away
with it for at least 5 years. I was glad I found that little gap in their
coverage, which was around the time they began to implement the dyno test.
