subject: WHAT ARE WE? PART 1

Hi Sondra...
-> LP>Uh, well, Sister Theresa... I've read an account of the
-> day-to-day activities of Sister Theresa and her nuns, written by a
-> man who'd had a lot of contact with her and who seemed to have no
-> particular axe to grind. Now I can't find the article and can't
-> remember if he was an aid worker himself or a journalist.
-> SB>If you find the article, or remember the person's name, let me
-> know. Maybe I'll do a bit more research on her myself. It's possible
-> that I;m wrong about Sister Theresa. I've been wrong before.
So far I've figured out that one of our missing back issues of Saturday
Night Magazine had a cover story about Sister Theresa, which is probably
what I'm remembering. I'll keep looking. There was also the unfriendly
book about her, The Missionary Position. I'll have a look for that in
the bookstore.
Anyhow, let's say that she does spend more effort praying than tending
to worldly medical needs. This is a good or a poor idea depending on
one's notions of the afterlife. Did I ever tell you that I had to
change family doctors once because the gentleman used to tell me that
'according to Scripture, this earthly life is not our final destination'
whenever I asked for practical suggestions? I finally couldn't go on
letting him depress me with this line.
I never gave him any intimation of my religious orientation and I don't
have any terminal illnesses other than having been born. I wonder what
he'd have thought if he'd had to go to an emergency ward and the docs
there had given him a line about Scripture instead of treatment. He's
retiring this year. I guess to him every illness was a fatal illness,
so why bother improving anything?
The accusation that Sister Theresa has allowed herself to be
photographed with notorious dictators, and that this has been useful to
the Vatican, is rather serious, I think. I'll try to check into this
one.
I think that Sister Theresa's reputation has been subjected to some
recent revisionism. One take is that she's an old-style aid worker. I
dunno. TTYL.
