Mics are like guitars. You need to try each one out in the way that you
would normally use it (same singing style, distance to mic, etc). You will
also need to try a variety of each brand of mic. You will find if you try 10
Shure SM58's, each one will sound different. Sometimes surprisingly so.
The SM58 is one of the most durable mics available, but I personally hate the
sound for vocals. They have a response peak at around 3K that I find
offensive, at least through a good sound system.
Some of the AKG mics are excellent, but most of them require phantom power,
which you may not have, and are also more fragile.
There are 3 Beyer mics I would try:
M400 - an inexpensive dynamic mic which sounds kind of like an SM58, but
better in my opinion. They do have slightly more handling noise. This one
probably costs a little bit less than an SM58.
M500 - A ribbon mic which has a really smooth frequency response and very
little handling noise. It has much better high-end response, which, in my
opinion, does wonders for vocals. It has very little proximity effect, which
may or may not work well for your particular voice. Also great on a lot of
acoustic guitars. Being a ribbon, it is more fragile than a dynamic mic.
M88 - Wonderful all-purpose dynamic mic. One of my favorites for vocals on
most people, as well as kick drum.
There are a couple of EV mics which are really nice, but may be out of
production. It's been over ten years since I kept track of these things. One
is the BK1. See if they still make it and try one out if you can find one.
