In a message on Thursday 04-20-16 Maurice Kinal said to Holger Granholm:
Good morning Maurice,
MK> Nice thing about German is that all the extra utf8 characters can
MK> all be converted to cp437.
If you think that CP437 is still the same as 7-bit ASCII, you're wrong.
Todays CP437 is the same as PC8.
MK> I used to think that u00df (0xc3 and 0x9f from your perspective) was
MK> the Greek letter beta but it turns out it is the Latin letter for
MK> sharp s (double s sound in German).
Yes it's there (CP437), as well as all the umlaut and accented characters
used in both scandinavian, and other languages.
CP850 (Multilingual), adds some more umlaut and accented characters, but
does also reduce the number of graphic, (line dawing) "characters".
MK> However I am still sticking with utf8 given the universallity which
MK> is sadly lacking in cp437 even for western European languages.
See above.
Re-discover CP437.
Have a nice day,
Holger
