I do the FIDONet echoes via FTN, but all the rest of the networks are
done via QWK Networking.
I do a manual poll (via batchfile setup) at least twice a day. However,
we're in our Tornado Season here in Arkansas, and that can mean several
days of thunderstorms. Lightning strikes around here like an ungrounded
Faraday cage. So, if there's a threat of storms, any BBS work, activity,
etc. has to wait. The polls are usually done when I get up in the morning,
and when the late afternoon weather data from the National Weather Service in
Little Rock comes out.
No amount of surge protection will protect you from a direct, or nearby
lightning hit. I personally am a 2 time lightning strike survivor
(indirect, but still got the shock)...however, I carry no electrical
charge, and can be handled safely.
