Yep, after you see 1/4 wave, it is time to look carefully at the results
and evaluate where you want to remove materilal and go do a few strokes at
a time and remove that area.  Guys in the class are constantly amazed that
doing 10 strokes around a mirror in a particular stroke change a 1/6th wave
optic to a 1/12th wave one.
