Using iptables you can lock down your Linux the same way your router does and better. In the days before Routers were a household name, it was suggested to use Linux as a router to keep the bad guys outta your computer. There was even a Linux Router Project which was a distro of Linux which fit on a floppy. Since routers are so cheap now, the project is defunct, but running Linux as your router is an excellent idea. It can even be fun if you install Snort as it does countermeasures :) If someone tries to hack you, it'll try to hack them.
