I agree with you.

I've learned lots about DOS and WINDOWS by reading messages on BBS's
while I was using a Commodore 64 way back before I had a 486 built in
1994.

In the early 1990's I even helped some one who used Windows 3.0 with a
problem he had, by what I had learned by reading BBS messages.
