It can take a few months for them to really kick in, if they are going
to work, but then the relief is on-going as long as you keep on taking
them.  Of course, some people don't find that they work for them... and
I know a couple of people, myself included, for whom it not only does
not work but instead causes additional pain.  :(  I've also seen lately
ads on the TV for a liquid version of it, but haven't pursued that.

And after the op, you'd probably need them for a short while as well,
while things begin healing...  Sounds like, though, like I would be,
you'd be keeping even that to a minimum.  :)  The basic threshhold
raisers don't work for me, I can push that up further on my own, so I'd
need a narcotic that cuts at the root of the pain... and those I limit,
too, as they tend to bind up the digestion which I really don't need. 
But it's a good thing to have something to fall back on if the pain
really is intolerable.  :)
