I'll go ya one better. While stationed in England at Burtonwood Air
Depot I had a 4 Speed Sturmey Archer Drive on a light weight Raleigh
bike. Complete with Generator, Headlight and taillight. When on
cross country trips we would get in behind one of those double decker
buses and speed up to the same speed. Using the bus as a wind break
sure made it easy to pump the pedals and go 35 MPH which was the
speedlimit in England at that time. The Conductors on those Buses
used to holler at us "Hey Bugger off Yank". But we paid them no mind.
When the Bus slowed to let off or take on passengers we just went
around and kept going. When we heard the Diesel Engine getting closer
and closer, we upped our pedal rate to his speed and dropped in behind
hiom again. I used to ride up to Blackpool on a three day pass that.
If we didn't want to pedal all the way, we just bought a ticket for our
Bikes and put them on the baggage car of the train and then rode to
where we were going on the train. We would get our bike out of the baggage
compartment and go riding off around London, or Manchester, or Edinborough
or whereever. Saw a lot of the English contryside that way. Even made
it over to Ireland and down into North Wales. Great place for cycling.
