subject: School buses and other

-> The other day I came up on a situations were I wasn't
-> sure what to do. I was driving down a four lane road
-> and was slowly passing (you know where I'm doing say 55
-> and they are doing 52-54) a couple of school buses.
-> Then the lead bus came to a RR crossing and started to
-> stop which leads to the question. Although the bus
-> didn't extend his stop sign I didn't know if I should
-> stop or not. I just slowed down so the bus was moving
-> before I reached it.
Although I'm not a LEO... I am a driver and, too, wanted to know the
answer so, I did some checking. Commercial drivers and chauffeurs with
passengers, and trucks carrying flammable cargo must stop within 15 to
50 feet of railroad tracks before crossing... unless of course the
crossing is marked with an exempt sign. We (you and I) must always stop
at railroad crossings if the following two conditions exist:
1. Flashing warning signal or if a flagger is present
2. If your vehicle is carrying a hazardous material
BTW, I live in Iowa so the above may or may not apply to you.
-> Now for another question. I was taught that when you
-> were turning onto a multi lane road from a two lane
-> road you turned into the closest (far left) lane. Then
-> moved over into the lane you wanted. In the past
-> couple of months I have seen every thing from cars to
-> police car to the buses in the question above turning
-> into the farthest (right hand) lane. Which is correct?
Although I can't find the answer in my Iowa Driver's Manual... you are
correct (again if you live in Iowa). How do I know? I found out while
taking my drivers test... ooops! :)
