PINE is open source, but not released under the GNU Public License. It was
released under the BSD license until 3.91, but is now under their own
license. The sticking point is that UW owns the trademark PINE, and doesn't
allow people to distribute changes.

ALPINE is under development, it's a APache v2 licensed fork.

It's free enough for me, if I don't like it I can always go to MUTT. But,
I've used PINE since 1995.  :)
