Especially the pain pills.  A friend of mine was taking lots of pain
meds for her arthritis in knees, hips and shoulders, and getting regular
cortisone shots as well to try to keep things working somewhat.  Her
bone doctor suggested that she might try glucosomine-chondroitin
supplements so she did.  She was able to get off the pain pills entirely
and reduce greatly the number of times that she needed the shots.  She
is also one of the ones I know of that has and uses a TENS machine...
hers is for pain in the spine/neck, for which she couldn't get shots.

Pain meds can be a life saver, if used when and how they should... but
they come with lots of side effects that can cause more problems.  I'd
use them short-term, or for ad-hoc, but not long-term chronic... there
I look for other solutions if at all possible, including mind over
matter types...  :)
