        Mark, I am starting to think that my laptop is close to giving
  up the ghost. Behaves weird now. Loosing the screen resolution and
  colour set. Goes back to 8k ( low rez ) on startup and sometimes
  when online.

        That is another symptom.  The lost LAN could be part of the
  problem too ???  The main problem was that I "burnt" this new HD, a
  40 g one. There is nothing I could do to revive it either. It
  sometimes will format but an install of XP on it will not find a C:\
  drive and quits.   Problems galore and Xmas coming up !
