Sure, but this still doesn't answer his question.
In my m34f at least disabling retraining or speed shifting will not
resultin them being rejected if requested by the remote modem. I'm
connected to a Courier now, it's happily retraining and speed shifting
over the noisy line. If I enable the retrain/rate change with %E1/2 then
my modem will start sending requests to the Courier to retrain or shift, as
well as receiving requests from the Courier.
I usually leave it on %E1, retrain, since the Courier can do all the
speed shifting. Having %E2 is pointless when connected to the Courier as
it won't upshift past what it thinks is best even if requested.
