I work in a way similar to you.  I do the bills twice a month, usually in
less than a hour.  I, too, only use the paper register to record the checks
that are issued, no deposits, credits, or balances needed.
I also balance the checkbook nearly every day.  I'll get into the
reconciliation section of the Quicken program, call my bank's automated
account information phone line, enter the balance of my account, tick off the
checks that have cleared the day before, and I'm done!  Takes less than a
minute!
I love the fact that when I enter a check in Quicken to make a payment on our
mortgage or car loan Quicken will also credit the mortgage account or car
loan account in Quicken and keep a running balance of principal and interest.
