I had the same kind of thing with Mandrake 8.1 when I threw a flat at it.
I'd definitely try blowing the partition table away and starting again with
the Iiyama/Idek tube.

But this doesn't excuse the RH failure.  Or the continuing trouble I've had
with digital-out soundcards.

(To soften the blow, many computers cannot now display their splash screen
on flat panels.  I've seen cases where the **BIOS** screen is flakey.  Then
there's the lovely gotcha that requires you to have an analogue CRT around
to set up a computer with a DVI-only flat panel. That's unacceptable.)
