Auckland Mayor John Banks says if Wellington can't cope with the
Lord of the Rings premiere, the City of Sails can 30 April 2003

If Wellington is unable make the grade for the world premiere of
the third Lord of the Rings film, Auckland can.

The Wellington City Council will decide tonight whether to underwrite
the refurbishment of the Embassy Theatre.

New Line Cinema - the trilogy's home studio
- says the capital can only host the Return of the King premiere if
the theatre is up to scratch.

New Line says the theatre is a crucial element in the premiere.

The Council had agreed to underwrite a seven million dollar bill
for the Embassy if the Theatre was unable to find other funding.

That decision may now be reversed - and if it is, another city
is ready and waiting to step in.

Auckland Mayor John Banks says if Wellington won't cough up,
Auckland would be privileged to host the December premiere.

He suggests Wellington's Mayor Kerry Prendergast should give him a call.

John Banks says the natural choice for the premiere is
the Civic Theatre in Queen Street, refurbished in 1999, which seats
around two-and-a-half thousand people.

Good theatre. I agree on that having been there to see "The Mikado"
a while back.

Being as John Banks had no input into the "Lord of the Rings" as I
understand it why is he putting his oar in.

He'd be better off putting the oar in to make the BOAT go faster!!!
