That is a LOT of work!! (Though the lap looks beautiful...)

You really don't have to have the hold the lap on it side, methinks. You
can have it flat on its back and use your soldering-gun-with-a-shim to
carve the channels bit by bit, and then simply take the partly full shims
and pour them into a nearby tin can or pot. It really works just as well,
in my opinion, and is a lot less work.
