>Steve Oostrom has a very different take on the Trek Universe.
While I don't agree with all of his assumptions and wouldn't write it that
way myself, I still very much enjoy reading=20 his stories.
Just out of curiosity, what assumptions don't you agree with?
As for very big starships, I don't have a problem with the Chamberlain's
size (but I do with its name; since Joshua Chamberlain is not the best
known Chamberlain in history, the ship should be called fully "U.S.S.
Joshua Chamberlain," but can be referred to as "Chamberlain"
when quick reference is necessary--just my opinion). Another problem with
the Chamberlain is that it looks like a smaller ship simply scaled up. I
would think that a 2 km ship would have a different shape, and perhaps more
closely resemble a starbase. I've done my share of large ships:
Lunar-class troop transport and evacuation ships--I'm not sure of the lengt= h,
but they can carry 5000 in comfort and 10,000 people in a pinch, and they
can land too (visions of Star Destroyers from the end of "Attack of
the Clones" dancing in my mind, although the ship design is
different).
Destiny-class passenger liners--almost a kilometre long starships for the
long haul flights.
Matrix-class (Odonan) ships, big 2-km disk using the massed warp convertor
technology all around the perimeter to move it. These ships are the mother
ships to the Starraider class fighter-like ships that were used in
"Song of Liberation." The Matrix-class ships are awkward and
bulky, and are intentionally kept out of harm's way (all of Trek's fancy
science cannot fu= lly
cancel out the law of inertia). None have actually appeared in a story
(the class name is unofficial) because they're kept out of sight.
Arosian Battlesphere--this would be the ultimate gun-bunny ship, something
like 4 km in diameter, over 400 decks and still enough room in the base to
hold large ships, even Galaxy-class. This ship was so big that warp drive
was inadequate, and it got around using a wormhole generator. It had 150
high-powered weapons placements all around it simply because it could not
really move that well and had to provide fire in any direction if=
attacked.
The Battlesphere was the mobile command centre for the Arosian forces.
Reading "Dark Horizon," I'm getting the feeling that the
Oceana-class is a = work
in progress, with lots of bugs to be worked out. I can see the class as a = long-
range explorer with its mobile starbase functions and even a colony support
ship. As a battleship, I think it's less effective. As Garry mentioned,
th= e power
of a starship comes from a very small volume (perhaps a bit more than the
volume of the fist, but still very small), so unless the weapon in question
needs a certain size, its power requirements should be able to be derived
f= rom
a smaller ship. I like the approach that Trek took in producing smaller, o= ver-
powered ships like the Defiant class as warships, because they allowed the
attack to come from multiple angles and to be sustained. In addition, in
S= teve-
Trek, they're working on mass-sensitive weapons to deal with the Borg, basi= cally
"the bigger they are, the bigger they blow," as the weapon uses
the ship's = mass
against it. I'd hate to see the Chamberlain get hit with that one, althoug= h the
weapon has not been deployed (the Borg have kind of disappeared from the
Steve-Trek universe after "Species Two").
Just some views... but I'm liking "Dark Horizon" anyway.
